Could this be a silver lining to the dark cloud that is Specter’s defection? It would be appropriate if Specter immediately started to be as much of a thorn in the side to the Dems as he was to us. The judicial nomination process is frought with peril, especially at the Supreme Court level (see H.W. Bush’s nomination of the tepid David Souter, as Eliot mentions below).
This is a fight Conservatives want, not only for policy reasons, but because it provides an excellent opportunity to pull back the curtain a little more on Obama’s exceptionally extreme agenda.
